IF I CONTROLLED IT

if i controled
this as a whole
i would dead all the titles and
mix in soul
with rock and roll
and house and all
knock down the walls
the hip hop laws
turn off auto tune
and show all flaws
open doors
to indie cats
with heart felt raps
and soulful tracks
reward the ones
who give us tons
rather than just one song
for our funds
if i controled it
i would demand
each a&r
be a music fan
be about respect
before ur check
if u spoon feed teens
feed them intellect
offer a message
offer a lesson
an escape, a blessing
offer a weapon
that would fire a bullet
in the form of words
that would kill the non sense
that we just heard
i would bring back the legends
develope the young
show them the beautiful way
our stories were sung
i would judge only
your heart and your tongue
cuz looks cant help
the soul of a song
if i controlled this
no art would be lost
over budgets and business
or projected charts
it would be how i felt
when i pressed play
and opened my ears
to what u had to say
forget about looks
all i would ask
is when u open ur mouth
give what u have
i believe in balance
i believe in music
i believe if you have it
you have to use it
so if i controlled it
first id let it go
sit back and watch
and see where it goes
open my heart
and enjoy what it shows
cuz only God can control
the direction of soul...

  2. The words you speak are so true and so sad. I'm going to have to make sure my guy reads this one because he always talking about how music has changed and how he continues to question things that are played on radio. He knows I love me some music from ERRO but it's not yet in rotation...I'm going to have to have a talk with him!

  6. Thank you Eric for saying what needed to be said. Now if we could get the industry to realize...? Or..we need to realize the ownership of this problem is not just on those who are in the industry. WE have to be aware of what we listen to, (stop just loving the beat!) WE need to support artist that are producing quality music, go out and see them in concert/showcases and purchase the CDs! WE need to stop filling our minds/souls with nonsense. So America..in the infamous words of infamous Spike Lee...

    WAKE UP!

    PLLLLLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEEEEEE?

  7. eric, your poem is beautiful. the passage below is why i constantly tell people to listen to your music and read your words. you are Spirit's faithful, interdependent and truthful scribe, singer, musician, teacher, activist, entrepreneur, downright cool brothalove.... enjoy black love day, v-day, black history month, and all that is good in the world.

my favorite passage from the poem is:

    "so if i controlled it
    first id let it go
    sit back and watch
    and see where it goes
    open my heart
    and enjoy what it shows
    cuz only God can control
    the direction of soul..."

when i read this passage, i said wow that brothalove eric is telling the truth once again. that's why i dig his music so much. it is from the heart and speaks Spirit's language.

    keep doing your thang erro.

    peace and love, ananda

  11. wow. i love this, somethin crucial. i know it's what YOU feel, but the way you expressed yourself in this piece makes it 360% relatable by any true music love/appreciator and/or artist.
i believe that "if i controlled it" were a reality ... anyone who appreciates the soul of music would be absolutely elated.

    again ... beautiful piece.

  15. A co-worker turned me onto the "Left" cd last year.....AND I HAVEN'T TURNED IT OFF YET!!! Track #10 is my favorite. My 5 year son even has every single song memorized. Fantastic cd. Fantastic artist.

Please come to Atlanta soon to do a show.

  16. Wow, Erro, I'm really feelin this poem. The part that jumped out at me the most and made me say "Mmm" was this...

    "if u spoon feed teens
    feed them intellect
    offer a message
    offer a lesson
    an escape, a blessing
    offer a weapon
    that would fire a bullet
    in the form of words
that would kill the non sense
    that we just heard"

That part got to me. I have a heart for young people, particularly adolescents. They are the focus of my research, my volunteer activities, and the career I plan to have in a few years. That portion of your poem reminded me of the power of music, and when I think of what music could be doing for them, as opposed to what it is doing to so many of them, it makes me really ache for a change.

    Thanks for sharing your gift,

    Tiphane

P.S. When, sir, are you coming to Columbus, OH? When I move back to MD in two years, I can appreciate all the shows you do there, but if you could visit Columbus, I know a bunch of us who would be appreciative :- ]
